Background[]
This competition consists of preliminary rounds leading to a final round. The select few who win their local contests are then invited to take part in the National Competition.
Requirements[]
Preliminary round
Participants are required to play two of three handpicked songs, one of which is chosen the day of the competition. Specifically, piece from Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier and one of two etudes which are decided on the day of the competition.

- Mimin Otogami was set to play Chopin's "Winter wind" and Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier Book 1, No. 17 Prelude however when she actually played she performed Chopin's "Revolutionary Étude".
- Ako Furusu played Chopin's "Revolutionary Étude" and Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier Book 1, No. 17 Fugue.
- Lucky Sonoda has prepared Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier Book 1, No. 1 Prelude, Chopin's Etude Op. 25, No. 9, "Butterfly" and Scriabin's Etude Op. 8, No.12 "Pathetique". When it came to competition he played Bach and Scriabin.
